Web part overview

The Newcomers web part displays automatically the new hires in your Digital Workplace. It creates social bond to boost employee engagement and help employee onboarding to make them feel integrated. It also displays social news with no maintenance cost from your communication teams.

You can select a range date and personalize the perimeter with Entra ID groups and request to get the right newcomers depending on the web part's context.

 

User functionality

The Newcomers web part displays the current information on new hires such as name, job title and date of arrival. 

The button on the right of the employee's profile picture is used to communicate with him or her through Microsoft's Team.

 

Use cases

This web part can be used to:

  • Display the newcomers of the last month of the company
  • Display the newcomers of the last 3 month of the Communication Team
  • Display the newcomers of a specific plant

Prerequisites

Permissions
The Newcomers component requires extended delegated permissions to function properly. It uses the following permissions:

  • Group.Read.All
  • User.Read.All

To approve permission requests, please refer to the following article: Permissions approval. If the component does not return any results, it is likely because the permissions were not granted during installation.

Entra ID Information

The Newcomers component uses information from your Entra ID to display the list of newcomers. We use the "Employee hire date" property to display the last people hired by your company.

In order for the new hires to be displayed automatically, the Entra ID administrator in charge of creating new accounts for your company must set the "Employee hire date" property for each account created.
This property can be updated manually, or automatically via the automations you set up to manage the arrival of your new employees.

How to update a profile in Entra ID

Add the web part

  1. Open the edit mode of the SharePoint page by clicking on edit at the top right of the page,

  2. Position the mouse over or under an existing web part, and click the "+" button to open the web part catalog. 

  3. Search or scroll down in the catalog to select the Newcomers web part in the category "News, people and event". 

  4. The web part is added to the desired location. 

Setting up the web part

There are three categories of available settings for the Newcomers web part:

  1. Layout
  2. Content settings
  3. Display

1. Layout

  • Choose the size of the web part by clicking on: Small, Medium or Large. It corresponds to standard Jint's web part Size you can use to align web part in your pages.
  • Personalize the size of the web part by adding the amount of pixels under "Customize". 
  • According to the height value, the web part will display an either Small or Medium Card

2. Content settings

  • Choose to display the title of the web part by activating "Show web part title". 
  • Write a title in the text box. 
  • Duration range display allows you to set the period of arrivals to display the hires within range. It can be specific period or customized in days.

  • You can also select a perimeter of people defined by Entra ID groups to scope the hires.
     

  • There is an option to include or not external account. They are not included by default
  • You can also manually add filters to customize the scope. The Newcomers web part uses the user resource of Microsoft Graph APIs. For example, if you want to display the newcomers in a particular function like director, you would write "JobTitle eq 'Director'".
    You can hit the "Run" button to make sure your filter is correct, and get the API's answer otherwise.

3. Display

  • Add a shadow effect of the web part by activating "Enable shadow" and choose between Light, Normal and Strong shadow.

  • The "Radius" setting allows you to select the border shape of the web part. You can choose between the settings: Semi-rounded, Rounded and Pill. You can also customize it yourself by adding the amount of pixels. 

  • You can choose the card colors. You can set the color, a gradient and transparency of the cards.
